What is the Bellows Conjecture?

Cauchy’s rigidity theorem states: If P and P’ are combinatorially equivalent convex polyhedra such that the corresponding facets of P and P’ are congruent, then P and P’ are congruent polyhedra. For many years it was unknown whether the same theorem was true in general for non-convex polyhedron. In 1977, more than 160 years after the work of Cauchy, Robert Connelly discovered a polyhedron P (wi...

Restrictive chest bellows disease and frontometaphyseal dysplasia.

We describe a patient with frontometaphyseal dysplasia (FMD), restrictive chest bellows disease, hypercapnic respiratory failure, and cor pulmonale. Treatment with intermittent supplemental oxygen, nocturnal nasal volume ventilation, and posture modification was successful in partial resolution of chronic hypoventilation and excessive daytime somnolence.

Bending Fields, Rigidity, and the Bellows Conjecture

Aleksandrov and Pogorelov used bending fields (the velocity fields of continuous isometric deformations) to show infinitesimal rigidity of some classes of surfaces ([2] and [12]). Bending fields (and the rigidity matrix) were also successfully employed in the study of infinitesimal rigidity of polyhedra and tensegrity frameworks (see [7]). We will use these tools to re-derive a previously known...

An Interview with Neurogeneticist Rudolph Tanzi

Dr. Rudy Tanzi is a Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Harvard University as well as the Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been a leader in the genetics of nervous system disorders since his first job in the lab of Dr. James Gusella as part of the team that identified the genetic basis of Huntington’s disease. Since then his own l...

Cardiac Failure Secondary to Ineffective Bellows

The two cases to be presented demonstrate ventilatory insufficiency of the restrictive type due ,in the first instance to primary neuromuscular dysfunction and in the second to chronic pleural disease with resulting calcification and restriction of the underlying parenchyma and diaphragm. Of particular interest was the development of congestive heart failure in both of these patients. These cas...
